At nearly two miles above sea level and being blessed with over 300 days of annual sunshine, Cripple Creek literally sets in a high mountain bowl still lined with gold. Those casting their eyes on the city for the first time from the highway overlook are often struck by the visual impression that they're viewing the Machu Picchu of North America. Eventually, the area gave up more gold than the strikes of California and Alaska combined. The region's yield was considered the 5 th richest in the world and is currently ranked 4 th . And the City of Victor, rich with more gold and called the "City of Mines," could once be reached by walking from one town to the other by way of the maze of underground tunnels. And now, visitors to the area are treated to the unusual sight of the donkeys-at-large that are allowed to freely roam the streets and neighborhoods solely because they're the descendants of the original miner's animals.

Today, those long-ago dreams of prosperity still draw thousands to Cripple Creek's wide variety of gaming casinos. For others, it's the magnetic pull of the spectacular high mountain scenery and wildlife that graces each and every byway into the area.
